The Tea Ceremony
At Home · Lễ Gia Tiên
Before the church, there was the home — the elders seated, the red and gold of the áo dài, the pearl khăn đóng, and the slow, deliberate offering of tea to parents and grandparents. It is a rite of gratitude and of asking: for blessing, for permission, for the continuation of a family line. The emotion in the room needed no translation.
The Nuptial Mass
Saint Joseph Catholic Church · Pomona
Saint Joseph is a parish thick with texture — a Pietà mosaic rising over the apse, the words Sancte Joseph, ora pro nobis set above the altar, and tall windows of Saint Joseph himself flanking the nave. Vivian came down the stairs and through the church to meet Ben at the altar. What followed was the liturgy, unhurried and entire: the vows, the rings, the consecration.
Portraits in the Rain
Outside the Parish · Golden Hour
The rain that came through gave the afternoon its light. We worked the church exterior and the streets just beyond it — the two of them under the falling rain, then a break in the clouds for the last warm sun of the day. These are the frames where a wedding stops being an event and becomes a portrait of two people.
The Reception
A Candlelit Ballroom
The reception was warm and low-lit — hanging wisteria above the floor, a "B|V" monogram, candlelight on every table. There was the grand entrance, a first dance, the dances with parents that ask the most of everyone, and the toasts that follow. A day that began in gratitude ended in joy.
